Gold IRA Setup Fees: The One-Time Costs, Company by Company
Published ยท Updated
How much is a gold IRA setup fee?
Most companies that publish one charge $50. You pay it once, to the custodian, when the account opens. Noble Gold lists $80. Goldco's is $50, with no published waiver. On a larger account, ask whether a written waiver covers setup; two companies name it in their terms. The setup fee is the smallest cost of getting started. Closing the account later costs $250 at Equity Trust, five times as much. The markup on your first purchase usually costs more than either.

Setup fees by company
The setup fee belongs to the custodian, so the figure is the same wherever the custodian is the same. Here is what each company publishes.

| Augusta Precious Metals $50,000 minimum Paid partner | $50 | Possibly; setup isn't named: Qualifying accounts may receive up to ten years of eligible fees paid by Augusta |

Three figures need a note. Noble Gold's newest support page lists $80; an older Noble page splits the same total into a $50 setup fee and a $30 wire. Patriot Gold's "no set up fees" appears in the section about its Texas depository, so it may not cover the custodian. American Hartford Gold doesn't publish a setup fee at all.
The waiver column needs reading closely. Lear Capital and Patriot Gold name the setup fee in their terms. Birch Gold and Augusta cover "fees" without saying whether setup is one of them, and Priority Gold's waiver is for storage and shipping.
The one-time costs that sit next to setup
Opening the account is rarely a single charge. Equity Trust, the custodian behind most of these figures, publishes these one-off fees:
| When it happens | Fee |
|---|---|
| Opening the account | $50 |
| Sending money out by wire | $30 |
| Selling (liquidating) metal | $30 |
| Closing the account | $250 |
| Paying an invoice late | $50 |
The closing fee is the one people forget. At $250, it is five times the setup fee, and you pay it whether you leave because you sold, because you moved to a cheaper custodian, or because you took the metal out. Noble Gold lists the same $250 closure fee and a $75 charge to take coins out of the IRA instead of cash.
Paying with a card can add more. American Hartford Gold's transaction agreement lists a 3% fee on card payments; on a $25,000 purchase that is $750, fifteen times a typical setup fee.
What "first-year cost" really includes
Companies that publish a first-year total don't always add the same things. Lear Capital publishes first-year totals of $315 with commingled storage and $365 with segregated storage. Its itemized setup, admin and commingled storage add up to $285, so Lear's own total is $30 higher; Lear doesn't say what the difference covers. Birch Gold's example includes a $30 wire next to the $50 setup, which is why the fee table on Gold IRA Companies Ranked shows Birch's setup as two figures rather than one.
Our calculator counts setup, admin and storage only, the same three lines for everyone, so the totals compare like with like. Add the wire yourself if your custodian charges one to bring money in.
Is a waived setup fee worth chasing?
A covered setup fee saves $50. That is real money, but it shouldn't decide anything on its own. The markup on a single purchase can run to thousands of dollars, and a company that waives $50 while charging a wider spread on the coins it recommends leaves you worse off. The spreads and markups guide covers how to ask for that number.
Waivers that cover a year or more of admin and storage are a different scale. Our fee waiver page lists each one with its conditions.
Questions to ask before you sign the application
- What is the setup fee, and is it charged by the custodian or the dealer?
- Is there a wire or transfer fee to move money in from my current IRA or 401(k)?
- What will it cost to close the account or move it to another custodian?
- If a fee is waived, is that written in the account paperwork?
The first question matters most with dealers that work with several custodians, because the setup fee follows the custodian. Goldco is one of them and doesn't publish its full list; the Goldco review on Gold IRA Companies Ranked has a section on the custodians it uses. If you've seen an older Goldco figure quoted somewhere, its notes on Goldco's fees explain which page each number came from.
Verdict
Setup fees are close to identical across the companies that publish them, and Goldco's $50 is the same as most. Don't pick a company over a setup fee. Check the closing fee, ask about the wire, and put your attention on the markup.
Goldco's kit is open from $25,000; Augusta's guide is for $50,000 and up.

Augusta's published minimum is $50,000. Below that, it isn't an option.

Setup fee questions
Is the setup fee the same at every company?
Mostly. It is usually $50, charged once by the custodian when the account opens. Noble Gold lists $80. Some companies cover it on qualifying accounts.
Is the setup fee the only one-time cost?
No. Moving money by wire costs $30 at Equity Trust, and closing the account later costs $250. Selling metal through the custodian has its own processing fee. The markup on the first purchase is a one-time cost too, and usually the largest.
Who charges the setup fee, the dealer or the custodian?
The custodian, which is the company that holds the IRA and files its reports. The dealer sells you the metal. Several dealers quote the custodian's fee on their own sites, which is why the figures match.
Does Goldco charge a setup fee?
Goldco publishes a $50 setup fee. We found no published waiver of it.
Can I avoid the gold IRA setup fee?
Some companies cover it on larger accounts. Lear Capital publishes that it covers the setup fee on invoices over $10,000, and Patriot Gold publishes no setup fees on qualified accounts of $100,000 and up. Birch Gold covers the first year's fees over $50,000 and Augusta pays eligible fees for qualifying accounts, but neither says whether setup is included. Get any waiver in writing with the qualifying amount.
