Gold IRA Custodian Fees vs Dealer Costs: Who Charges What
Published ยท Updated
What are gold IRA custodian fees?
Custodian fees are what the trust company holding your IRA charges. At Equity Trust, which most of these companies use, that is $50 to open and $125 a year. Storage is a separate depository fee. The dealer's markup is separate again, and the custodian never shows it to you. If your dealer names Equity Trust, expect those figures. If it offers a custodian you don't know, ask for its schedule before you sign. Closing the account later costs $250 at Equity Trust, so know that before you open.

Three companies, three kinds of charge
A gold IRA involves three businesses, and each one charges differently.
| Who | What they do | What they charge |
|---|---|---|
| Custodian | Holds the IRA, keeps records, reports to the IRS, pays the vault | Setup $50, admin $125 a year, wire $30, liquidation $30, closing $250, paper statements $60 a year |
| Depository | Stores and insures the metal | Storage $110 (commingled) or $160 (segregated) a year |
| Dealer | Sells you the metal, often buys it back | The markup in the price; rarely published |
The custodian is there because of the tax rules. The IRS counts most metals and coins as collectibles, which an IRA can't buy without the purchase being treated as a distribution. Bullion of a required fineness is an exception only if a bank or an approved non-bank trustee keeps physical possession. The custodian and its depository are how an IRA stays inside that exception.
Custodians each company names
Most of the companies we track send customers to Equity Trust. That is the main reason their fee figures match.

Goldco is the least specific: it calls Equity Trust "one of" its custodians and says customers choose from the custodians it works with, without a full list. The Goldco review on Gold IRA Companies Ranked lists the questions to put to Goldco about which custodian and depository will hold your account. Patriot Gold names six custodians, from The Entrust Group to STRATA Trust Company.
If you are offered a custodian you don't recognize, ask for its fee schedule before you sign anything; the fees above apply to Equity Trust only. Once you have that schedule, the fee calculator at Gold IRA Companies Ranked takes custom setup, admin and storage figures, so you can total another custodian's fees over the years you plan to hold.
What the custodian does not do
It's easy to assume that a regulated custodian checks the deal. It doesn't. The SEC's investor alert on self-directed IRAs is blunt: these custodians don't sell investment products or give advice, don't evaluate the quality or legitimacy of what you buy, and don't verify financial information about it. They hold and administer the assets.
For a gold IRA, that means the custodian will process the purchase at whatever price the dealer and you agreed. The markup is between you and the dealer. A statement from a well-known custodian says nothing about whether you paid a fair price, which is why the markup questions matter more than the custodian's name.
How dealers are paid, and why it matters
Custodian fees are fixed. The dealer's income comes from the margin on the metal, and how its staff are paid shapes what they suggest. Three companies publish something about it:
- Augusta: Educators salaried, no product-specific commissions; some staff may get fixed product-neutral incentive.
- American Hartford Gold: Sales representatives paid on commission.
- Birch Gold: Specialists paid commission on completed transactions.
Commission pay isn't wrong in itself, but it is worth knowing when a representative recommends one coin over another. Ask the question for any company not on that list.
Keeping custodian fees down
- Choose e-statements: $60 a year saved at Equity Trust.
- Pay invoices on time: the late fee is $50.
- Know the $250 closing fee before you open, so a later move doesn't surprise you.
- Batch your trades: every liquidation and wire is a separate charge.
The custodian line rarely separates one company from another. The gold IRA fee comparison at Gold IRA Companies Ranked shows how often it comes down to the same Equity Trust figure, and flags the companies that work with a second custodian whose fees differ.
Verdict
Custodian fees are small, flat and mostly identical, because most of these dealers use the same custodian. Spend a minute confirming the schedule and the closing fee, then spend the rest of your effort on the dealer's markup, which no custodian checks for you.
Goldco works with Equity Trust among others and takes accounts from $25,000. Augusta uses Equity Trust and starts at $50,000.

Augusta's published minimum is $50,000. Below that, it isn't an option.

Custodian fee questions
What does the custodian charge for?
For holding the IRA. That means a one-time setup fee and a yearly admin (maintenance) fee, plus transaction fees such as wires. At Equity Trust these are $50 and $125 a year.
Is the custodian the same as the gold IRA company?
No. The company you call usually sells the metal. The custodian is a separate bank or trust company that holds the IRA, reports to the IRS and pays the depository. Most dealers work with one or a few custodians.
Which custodian does Goldco use?
Goldco names Equity Trust Company as one of the custodians it works with and does not publish a full list.
Can I choose my own custodian?
Often, yes, though a dealer may only work with certain ones. Ask which custodians the dealer supports, and compare their schedules before you open the account.
Does the custodian check the gold I buy?
Not for quality or price. The SEC's investor alert says self-directed IRA custodians do not evaluate the quality or legitimacy of investments and are only responsible for holding and administering the assets.
Are custodian fees tax deductible?
That depends on your situation and how the fees are paid. Ask a tax professional; we don't give tax advice.
